Spring Is Almost Sprung! Why We Dress Our Dogs

When we were kids, it was rare to see dogs wearing anything other than their own fur. Today, our beloved fur babies wear shirts, jackets, boots, and more. Whether it was a lack of pet‑apparel innovation or simply not knowing how different climates affect dogs, clothing just wasn’t part of everyday dog life back then.

In 2026, it looks very different. MOMIJI Dogs is based in Calgary, and Calgary is a place where you can experience all four seasons in one day. For us, it just makes sense to bundle up our pups in jackets and boots because we never know what will happen! But what about the warmer months? Should our dogs still wear clothing in Spring or Summer? 

Across the Pond

During our 2024 trip to Japan, one thing stood out immediately: the dogs were incredibly well groomed and stylish. Some were even dressed better than we were! And despite the heat, many dogs still wore clothing.

Talking with local dog owners and taking from our own observations, we learned that these outfits weren’t just for fashion—they served real benefits for the dogs themselves.

Benefits for Dogs (and Their Pawrents)

Clothing for Different Weather Conditions

Different fabrics help with different climates.Cotton and linen are breathable materials that keep dogs cool on warm days while providing protection from sudden gusts of wind outside and chilly indoor air conditioning. The right clothing can help regulate temperature all year round.

Skin and Allergy Protection

For dogs with sensitive skin or environmental allergies, clothing acts as a barrier against pollen, dust, and grass. Did you know, all dogs can get sunburned, but it's especially common in dogs with thin coats or light-skin. Clothing is a physical barrier that can prevent sun exposure.

Cleanliness and Hygiene

For long‑haired dogs, clothing can prevent debris, bugs, and outdoor particles from sticking to their coat. This is especially true for our dogs as they both have long hair. In Winter, a shirt or jacket prevents wet snow from sticking to their coat and in Summer, it helps prevent dandelion fluff from sticking to them. 

Anxiety and Stress Support

There’s been more and more snug‑fitting garments such as shirts and jackets designed for anxious dogs. These garments claim to provide gentle pressure that can help dogs feel calmer during potentially stressful situations like loud noises, travelling or large crowds.

Safety and Visibility

Speaking to our Japanese friend and dog owner, a helpful insight they provided was because of their later work hours. They often get home in the evening and when it comes time to take their dog out for a walk, the sun has already set, making it difficult to see their black-coloured dog during the nighttime. To help with visibility, they’ll often dress their dog with a reflective shirt to ensure their dog can be seen.

Style and Expression

Dog apparel is more than just something cute to put on, it enhances the everyday moments pet parents and their dog share together. Getting ready for a morning walk, heading out for coffee, or snapping a quick photo suddenly feels a little more special. It adds joy, personality, and intention to simple routines, making them feel like shared experiences rather than just tasks.

And it is not only about the pet parent. The right clothing can keep your dog warm on chilly days, protect their fur, or provide light coverage when needed. When chosen thoughtfully, apparel supports your dog’s comfort while also bringing a sense of fun and connection to your time together.

For us, we’ll keep dressing Koopa and Koji in whatever keeps them comfortable, protected, and happy - while enjoying all the special moments we create together along the way!
